Saraswaths are the descendants of Brahmarshi Saraswath Muni. Saraswath Brahmans are known for ancient Vedic wisdom and its propagation to different parts of the world. Saraswath Brahmans have remained the backbone of Vedic culture and they are known for their qualities such as simplicity, virtuousness, truthfulness, and ascetic inclination. All these traits of the highest human culture were built-up by Rishis and Maharishis who lived on the banks of the river Saraswati. The Vedic civilization started at the Saraswati river basin because the Saraswati river provided a stable supply of drinking water, made the land fertile for growing crops and transportation of goods from one place to another. Saraswati was a highly venerated river in Vedic times, the waters of which once flowed from the Himalayas to the Arabian Sea. The Rigveda describes the river Saraswati as the best of all rivers surpassing all other rivers in splendor and benevolence. The various natural factors such as shrinkage of glacial cover and meltwaters, and the tectonic disruption of the input channels in the Himalayan terrain contributed towards the gradual decay and ultimate extinction of this mega river Saraswati. With this, Saraswath brahmans who were living on the banks of the Saraswati river migrated to other parts of India.
